Remodeling small bathrooms can be tricky. You want plenty of space for storage, and enough room to move around, all without moving your three major fixtures: the tub/shower, sink, and toilet. 7 Small Bathroom Remodeling Tips to Try

Try a Walk-In Shower

Bathtubs take up a lot of physical and visual space. Replacing the tub with a walk-in shower lets you regain space in both ways. In many cases, you can also reduce the size of your walk-in shower at the same time. The average bathtub is roughly 5 feet long by 2.5 feet wide. Scaling down to a 4-foot shower gives you back 2 to 3 square feet of floor space, which can make a big different in small bathrooms!

Choose Glass Shower Doors

For walk-in showers and tub-shower combos, getting rid of shower curtains helps open up your small bathroom even more. Shower curtains create a wall within an already small space, but glass shower doors reduce that effect, and let more light into the space. Choose from clear or textured glass shower doors depending on your style preferences and privacy needs.

Keep the Walls Light & Bright

Speaking of walls, lighter shades help small bathrooms feel larger. Lots of Improveit customers already use this trick. White, Calcutta, and silver-white marble were the top three colors choices for shower walls in 2020. Moving into 2021, we introduced three new lighter-toned gray color options that are very popular for bathrooms.

Consider Your Sink Setup

Bathroom sinks can be a double-edged sword when remodeling small bathrooms. Vanity cabinets offer great storage but take up a lot of space. Space-saving pedestal sinks have a smaller footprint, but little to no storage. Your best option depends on how much square footage you have, and what your other storage options are. Do you have a linen closet in or near the bathroom? If so, a pedestal sink could let you free up some bathroom floor space. No additional storage? Look for vanity cabinets that add under-sink storage without overwhelming the space.

Keep the Floor Clear

If you do choose a vanity, look for furniture-style designs. These vanities have feet that raise the cabinet off the floor for the illusion of more space. Wall-mounted vanities offer even more space by attaching the cabinet to the wall. Keep in mind, if your current bathroom flooring doesn’t continue underneath your cabinets, you may need to update your flooring to achieve these stylish and space-friendly looks.

Add Mirrors and Medicine Cabinets

Mirrors are great for reflecting more light in, making small bathrooms feel brighter. Mirrored medicine cabinets have the added bonus of offering storage space too. Make the most of your vertical storage space and light-reflection by using more than one mirrored medicine cabinet in your small bathroom. Most of these can be recessed into the wall so that extra storage doesn’t jut into the space.

Use Your Shower for Storage

Don’t forget to use your shower walls for storage too! Corner shower caddies are great for keeping shampoo bottles, loofahs, etc., neatly organized and off the shower floor. Shower niches are another popular option. Like medicine cabinets, niches recess into the wall, making great use of vertical space. For walk-in showers, add a popular shower bench. These make it easy to relax in the shower, and double as a storage shelf.

Bonus Idea for Remodeling Small Bathrooms: Add a Window

According to Houzz, nearly a third of homeowners don’t have enough lighting in their bathrooms, and one in 10 have no natural light at all. Adding a window can boost your bathroom’s brightness, which helps it appear larger – plus you get the added benefit of ventilation in an often steamy space. Privacy glass, or choosing an awning window lets you get a bathroom window benefit without sacrificing privacy.

FACT: Remodeling a Small Bathroom Increases Resale Value

Whether you’re remodeling for yourself or to improve your resale value, ideas for remodeling small bathrooms are important to keep in mind. The 2021 Cost vs. Value report says bath updates are some of the best remodeling projects for return-on-investment. At the same time, the National Kitchen & Bath Association says single-family homes are shrinking, while the number of bathrooms in single-family homes is growing overall. This means small bathroom designs could be a priority in the future.
