Wood Rot Leads to All New Windows in this suburban home

As a DIY-er at heart, Amanda Mills has taken on a variety of home improvement projects herself, with help from family and friends. But when she and her husband Seth noticed pieces of wood from a window frame – in their toddler’s bedroom no less – they knew it was time to replace their windows, and that professional installation was the right way to go.

The Mills’ home was built in 1999 and had its original windows. “They were really good windows, but they were wood,” Amanda says. “I don’t link to paint, and wood window require more maintenance. The one that had the most problems was on the southwest side of the house where the weather hits the hardest, and I think that’s why it started falling apart.”

None of the other windows in the house were showing signs of wood rot, but a few were hard to open and close. That led Amanda and Seth to ask: Do we replace just one window, or more than one? “That bedroom has two windows, so replacing only one would have looked silly,” Amanda says. “Then once you replace those, where do you stop?”

They discussed replacing just the windows on the back of the house, or just the second floor (which had always been unbearably hot). But every phased installation option led to inconsistency somewhere else. Ultimately, replacing all the windows made the most sense, both visually and functionally.

They’ll never have to worry about finding splintered wood on their children’s bedroom floor again!
