Garden Tub Removal Makes Room for an Extra Large Walk in Shower in this Cincinnati Bathroom Makeover
With an unused garden tub and a crumbling stone shower in their primary bathroom, Lexie Bopp and Mary Lynn Woebkenberg knew exactly what they were looking for when they visited the Greater Cincinnati Remodeling Expo.
“We knew the shower had to be completely redone,” Lexie says. “The tiles were all coming loose, but we also had a garden tub that we wanted removed. The tub hadn’t been used in years – we’re just not ‘bath’ people – so the project really became a full bathroom remodel.”

With that in mind, Lexie and Mary Lynn toured the remodeling expo looking for a company that would be able to help bring their bath and shower needs to life: A modern design, better functionality, and low maintenance. After meeting with Grant, their Improveit design consultant, they knew they had found solutions for a major piece of the puzzle: The shower remodel and garden tub removal.
Shower Expansion Uses Light Finishes to Brighten the Space
In working with Grant, Lexie and Mary Lynn chose a clean and fresh look with Calcutta Marble for their shower surround. The new acrylic walls give a beautiful natural stone look, but without the issues they dealt with in their previous stone shower. Years of water and soap seeping into the porous stone and grout caused their old tiled shower to begin crumbling. Now, Lexie and Mary Lynn can rest assured their acrylic walls won’t suffer the same damage. In fact, soap and water is the preferred easy-clean method for their new space!

Beyond the beautiful, low-maintenance shower walls, the couple get to enjoy more space in their new shower. Removing the outdated, oversized garden tub let them reclaim about 15 square feet of floor space in their bathroom! Using that found square footage, they opted to increase their shower footprint by 8 inches, and repurposed the remaining space with a beautiful bench for an easy place to get ready in their spa-like bathroom.
Extra Large Walk in Shower Anchors Beautiful Bathroom Makeover
Lexie says she and Mary Lynn were both impressed with Improveit throughout the project. “Grant was great to work with, and our installer was amazing,” she says. “He cleaned up after himself every single day and made sure everything was installed perfectly. When it came time to install the shower glass, he was careful to only accept glass that was cut exactly as he measured it to fit our walls that were out-of-square.”
In addition to the garden tub removal and shower expansion, the couple’s bathroom makeover included updated flooring, vanities, mirrors, and an electric towel warmer.
Overall, The final design is beautifully bright. With light coming in from the bathroom’s beautiful leaded glass window, plus light walls in the extra-large walk in shower, and more space in the floorplan, Lexie and Mary Lynn have a truly refreshed bathroom makeover to enjoy!
