Replacing a Corner Tub with a Custom Acrylic Shower
This custom corner shower uses the same footprint as the oversized garden tub it replaced
When the Breslins found Improveit during their bathroom remodeling research online, they were ready to say goodbye to their oversized garden tub and hello to a bathroom that better fit their everyday routine. Like many homeowners, Susan and Joseph found their deep soaking tub (set into a bulky, oddly shaped surround) was taking up valuable space without getting much use. Instead of tackling a complicated layout change, they worked with Improveit design consultant Josh White on a smarter approach: A corner tub replacement that puts the same bathroom footprint to better use.
By building their new walk-in shower within the exact same footprint as the old tub, they avoided the need for major structural changes—while still achieving a dramatic transformation. The result is a stunning, oversized shower that feels intentional, functional, and beautifully integrated into the space.
A Light-Filled Custom Acrylic Shower with thoughtful details
Converting the old garden tub space into a walk-in shower meant making room for a wall-mounted showerhead. To do that, Improveit designed and installed a new wall on one side of the space, and ran plumbing for the showerhead inside that wall. A complementary knee-wall was added to the other side of the shower, and all the walls were wrapped in grout-free acrylic so the entire wet space is waterproof and guaranteed for life.
Another standout feature of this new shower is the pair of windows positioned at the apex of the former tub layout. Rather than lose that natural light, the Breslins leaned into it. Improveit carefully trimmed out the windows with acrylic to protect against moisture, and the homeowners swapped out traditional blinds for frosted window film, keeping the space bright while adding privacy.
Making Room for What Matters Most
The new shower combines style and practicality with its easy step-in access, convenient accessories, and low maintenance finishes that look great. For their shower design, the Breslins chose:
- A custom-shaped white acrylic shower base
- Sleek matte white Grayline walls in a classic subway tile pattern
- Brushed nickel shower fixtures and out-swing shower door trim
- White corner shelves for convenient storage
- Shaving footrest for safety and comfort
With their old tub gone and new walk-in shower in place, the Breslins no longer needed their old, cramped shower stall. Rather than let that space go to waste, the Improveit team helped them reimagined it as a linen closet, adding valuable storage right where they needed it.
