Goodbye Tough Stains

Updating an old tub-shower combo

The tub-shower combo in John Newman’s 1970s ranch just outside Richmond, Ind. was in decent condition, but the old tile and grout were becoming difficult to clean, the shower didn’t offer enough storage, and the style didn’t match the other updates made to the bathroom. The space was ripe for a refresh, and the Improveit team was happy to help! 

In addition to replacing the bathtub, John chose a shower surround in our River Rock color to blend with the other warm and natural finishes in the space. The walls go all the way to the ceiling (unlike the former square tiles that stopped just above the showerhead) and feature a square tile pattern – but without the stubborn grout that’s so hard to keep clean. These walls are easy to clean with soap and water – and never need scrubbing! 

John also chose to install two 24-inch grab bars: one on the back wall for balance and leverage as needed, and one across the side wall that can be used for balance or as a towel bar. (Remember: it’s okay to hang your towel on a grab bar, but never use a towel bar for balance! Click here to learn why.) 

Because all Improveit showers are custom-designed to your wants and needs, John was able to choose the specific location of his grab bars, and the two 4-shelf shower caddies he selected could be installed a different heights. This means bottles and other shower needs stay in easy reach, without interfering with the grab bars.
