This Cincinnati-area family gave their master bathroom a major design overhaul. Working with Improveit designers and installers, the homeowners said goodbye to their dark, dated garden tub and dark green walls to make room for a bright and beautiful walk-in shower. This garden tub-to-shower conversion is a popular choice for homeowners looking to update bathrooms built in the 1980s and 90s, and the results here are stunning!

Garden Tub-to-Shower Conversion, Step by Step

In order to turn this garden tub alcove into a shower, Improveit crews first demoed the space, removing the dark green tub and tile surround, taking the space down to the studs. The Improveit process always pays special attention to what’s going on behind the walls of any tub or shower. Repairs to framing, plumbing, and insulation, are made, as well as adding any support framing for grab bars, benches, and other accessories.

With the behind-the-walls work complete, new water resistant drywall was hung throughout the shower space, and crews began installing the homeowner’s selected products. Their design included popular Silver White marble walls that go all the way to the ceiling of the shower alcove. Bountiful daylight comes in through the double-hung window, which features obscured glass to allow in natural light while maintaining privacy. Installers trimmed out the window with acrylic to match the shower walls and protect the window opening from moisture damage.

From there, the homeowners leveraged their own design skills to finish the space with stylish gray and metallic touches that match the shower’s brushed-nickel fixtures. With plenty of storage on the shower walls, and an overall beautiful design, this updated master bath is a perfect example of why so many homeowners are saying goodbye to their outdated garden tubs.
