Dark Bathroom? Try These 5 Bathroom Lighting Ideas
Dark Bathrooms Are Weighing on Homeowners. Here are Five Bathrooms Lighting Solutions to Solve Your Problem
Does your bathroom feel darker than ever? You’re not alone. A survey of nearly 3,000 U.S. homeowners found that better bathroom lighting is on many remodeling wish lists. Here are five ways to achieve that in your space.
Houzz Report Says Homeowners Crave Bathroom Lighting Ideas
“Lighting issues are at the top of the pet peeve list for bathrooms,” says Liza Hausman, VP of Industry Marketing for Houzz. According to the 2021 U.S. Houzz Bathroom Trends Study, lighting issues are ranking higher on the list of features homeowners want to change in their bathrooms. Nearly a third of homeowners (28%) reported Insufficient lighting before their bath remodels, ranking among the top five concerns, alongside old and outdated style, insufficient storage, small showers, and poor ventilation.
Lighting made a second appearance farther down the list of 15 bathroom pet peeves. More than one in ten surveyed homeowners (11%) lamented that their bathrooms had no natural light. Whether these bathrooms are in a basement location or an interior space in the home, a lack of windows can certainly contribute to a dark bathroom.
Bathroom Lighting Trends Toward Spa-Like Spaces
It’s no wonder homeowners are frustrated with their bathroom lighting. Houzz report says 41% of homeowners are using their renovated bathrooms as a space to relax, and lighting plays a big part in the spa-like ambiance they’re looking for. Interestingly, that dark bathroom feeling actually has a place in this trend.
“Renovated bathrooms continue to draw homeowners for rest and relaxation,” Hausman says. “The top features that help with relaxation include cleanliness, lack of clutter, dimmable lighting, and greenery.”
Hausman says the Houzz bathroom trends report shows requests for dimmable lighting jumped 6 percentage points from the 2020 report to 38%. We can certainly understand how this feature can make a dark bathroom more attractive for a calming space!
5 Ways to Brighten Up a Dark Bathroom
Whether your bathroom is windowless or has loads of natural light, the Houzz Bathroom Trends report shows a big emphasis on bathroom lighting needs. Here are five ways to make the most of the light in your bathroom.
Replace Your Light Fixtures
Hausman says the Houzz Bathroom Trends report indicated 82% of homeowners replace their bathroom light fixtures during a renovation. Hausman says fixtures with glass and metal are the most popular selections, with gold-toned and matte black finishes currently trending. Bathroom light fixtures are available in a variety of styles and finishes to complement with your bath design. Most collections include single-light sconces, as well as 2-, 3-, and 4-light options for more light where you need it. Using dimmer switches and dimmable bulbs on selected fixtures can add the ambiance you’re looking for.
Add a Window
Not enough natural light in your bathroom? You might be able to add a window for better lighting and added ventilation in your bathroom. Improveit’s crews love helping homeowners make this bathroom feature come to life. With a privacy glass option, many of our bath remodeling customers add or replace windows as part of their bath remodeling projects. Special trim pieces make it easy to add windows to showers as well!
Choose Ventilation Fans with Lights
Ventilation fans are an important bathroom feature to exhaust both excess moisture and unpleasant odors from the air. Consider upgrading your ventilation fan to a lighted version for added illumination.
Try Light Colors and More Glass
If you’re trying to overcome a dark bathroom, use light colors in your design. White or light-toned cabinetry, vanity tops, shower surrounds, and wall colors add style without visually weighing down the room. Many variations of the 2022 color of the year can keep your bathroom both bright and on-trend. Replacing a shower curtain with a glass shower door also helps visually lighten your bathroom space, and lets light into every corner. Like mirrors, these design options are also great for helping to make a small bathroom feel bigger.
