Houzz: Homeowners Crave Bathroom Lighting Ideas
“Lighting issues are at the top of the pet peeve list for bathrooms,” says Liza Hausman, VP of Industry Marketing for Houzz. According to the 2021 U.S. Houzz Bathroom Trends Study, lighting issues are ranking higher on the list of features homeowners want to change in their bathrooms. Nearly a third of homeowners (28%) reported insufficient lighting, ranking among the top five concerns, alongside old and outdated style, insufficient storage, small showers, and poor ventilation.
The survey also found that desiring more daylight is among homeowner’s bathroom lighting trends. More than one in ten homeowners (11%) lamented that their dark bathroom problems stemmed from having no natural light.
Bathroom Lighting Trends Toward Spa-Like Spaces
It’s no wonder homeowners are frustrated with their bathroom lighting. Houzz says 41% of homeowners use their bathrooms as a space to relax, and lighting plays a big part in the spa-like ambiance they’re looking for. Interestingly, that dark bathroom feeling actually has a place in this trend.
“Renovated bathrooms continue to draw homeowners for rest and relaxation,” Hausman says. “The top features that help with relaxation include cleanliness, lack of clutter, dimmable lighting, and greenery.”
Hausman says bathroom lighting trends include requests for dimmable lighting, which jumped 6 points from the 2020 report to 38%. We can certainly understand how this feature can make a dark bathroom more attractive for a calming space!

Whether your bathroom is windowless or has loads of natural light. Here are five bathroom lighting trends you can start using today.
Replace Your Light Fixtures
The Houzz report indicates that 82% of homeowners replace their bathroom light fixtures during a renovation. Hausman says fixtures with glass and metal are the most popular selections, with gold-toned and matte black finishes currently trending. Bathroom light fixtures are available in a variety of styles and finishes to complement with your needs and preferences. Most collections include single-light sconces, as well as 2-, 3-, and 4-light options for more light where you need it. Bathroom lighting trends toward dimmer switches and dimmable bulbs on selected fixtures can add the ambiance you’re looking for.
Add a Window
Not enough natural light in your bathroom? You might be able to add a window for better lighting and added ventilation. Improveit’s crews love helping homeowners make this bathroom feature come to life. With a privacy glass option and special acrylic trim pieces, many of our bath remodeling customers update windows as part of their bath remodeling projects.
Choose Ventilation Fans with Lights
Ventilation fans are an important bathroom feature to exhaust both excess moisture and unpleasant odors from the air. Consider upgrading your ventilation fan to a lighted version for added illumination.
Make Use of Mirrors
Work with the light in your bathroom by using mirrors to reflect light around the space. Great lighting solutions for windowless or small bathrooms are lighted mirrors and these mirrored medicine cabinets. These combine the benefits of light reflection with the functionality of a mirror, and may include a cabinet for storage.
Try Light Colors and More Glass
If you’re trying to overcome a dark bathroom, use light colors in your design. White or light-toned cabinetry, vanity tops, shower surrounds, and wall colors add style without visually weighing down the room. Many variations of the 2022 color of the year or 2023 color of the year can keep your bathroom both bright and on-trend. Blank Canvas from Behr, gives a perfect neutral backdrop.
Replacing a shower curtain with a glass shower door also helps visually lighten your space and lets light into every corner. Like mirrors, these design options also help make smalls bathroom feel bigger.
