Solved: Where to Place Shower Shelves
Nov 26, 2024Our installation team demystifies where to place shower shelves to maximize your shower storage
Shower shelving is more than just a practical feature. It’s an opportunity to customize your shower, enhance its functionality and add even more style. While you’re choosing where to put shower shelves in your bathroom design, Improveit’s expert construction team has a few tips for you to keep in mind.
Guidelines for Where to Place Shower Shelves
Unlike shower accessories like grab bars and bench seats, there are no ADA guidelines or other requirements for where to place shower shelves. It’s all up to you and your preference! Having said that, Improveit’s installation team has a couple of recommendations when choosing where to put shelves in shower designs:
- Tower and 4-shelf Caddies: These types of shelves have no minimum or maximum height requirements. Place them wherever you like, as long as they fit around other features like grab bars and bench seats.
- Single-Tier Shelves: When using multiple single-tier shelves, try to keep shelves about 16 inches apart to leave plenty of room for tall shampoo bottles.
- Inset Niches: Shower niches are set into the shower wall and are typically sized 12-by-24 inches. Place them anywhere that isn’t obstructed by plumbing or bracing (extra wall framing) for grab bars or bench seats.
Is There a Minimum or Maximum Height for Shower Shelf Placement
No! As long as you’ve considered the placement of plumbing, framing, and other accessories, niches and corner shower shelves can go just about anywhere. When choosing shower shelf height, consider:
- Who’s using the shower? Most adults may feel comfortable with shower shelving placed at eye-level. A children’s shower or tub/shower combo may benefit from shelving placed slightly lower for easy reaching.
- Mobility Issues or Wheelchair Use. If you’re creating an accessible shower for someone who prefers seated bathing, make sure to place shower shelving within easy reach. A niche may be more helpful when placed next to a shower bench rather than across from it.
*Remember, most accessible showers will also have grab bars. Plan your shower shelving placement after grab bar locations are accounted for.
