Beautiful New Windows for Home Makeover Sweepstakes 2023 Winner

Feb 20, 2024

Annette Henry was researching window replacement options when she became our 2023 Sweepstakes winner

When she designed and built her Lancaster, Ohio home in 2000, Annette Henry chose wood windows throughout and made sure the northeast-facing front of her home maximized morning sunlight. The glass entry door is flanked on both sides by large-scale mullioned double-hungs topped with enormous half-round architectural windows.

The style is impressive – but so is the wear and tear these windows have gone through over the years.

“I’ve been in desperate need of windows,” Annette told our team when we called to let her know about her big sweepstakes win. While she could have chosen from window replacementbathroom remodeling, or kitchen refacing for her prize, Annette didn’t waver on wanting to update her home’s windows.

Home Sweepstakes 2023 Grand Prize solves "desperate" need for windows

In addition to drafts caused by warped frames, Annette was noticing fogging and condensation between the glass, had at least one window that would no longer stay open on its own, and said the windows throughout the home were becoming difficult to open in general.

The windows had clearly outlived their useful life, which means her $10,000 sweepstakes grand prize came at the perfect time!

2023 sweepstakes winners old windows had warped sashes

Over time, the sashes on Annette’s windows warped. This is visible as the gap between the sashes is much wider on the right than on the left.

The cloudy area in the center of the window is where moisture has entered between the panes and caused fogging.

The crumbling seal between these two panes of glass is a tell-tale sign of old windows. Seal failure causes windows to lose their energy efficiency, which increases heating and cooling needs.

“I’ve had a couple of companies out here to get quotes for wood windows and I was shocked by the price,” Annette told us. Indeed, wood windows are generally the most expensive type of window you can choose for your home, costing roughly 20% more than vinyl replacement windows.

Annette also found that high price tag didn’t even cover the entire project. “The pricing they gave me was for unfinished wood,” she says. “I would have had to hire someone else to stain the windows to match my trim.”

Annette was pleased to see that Improveit’s quote came in at two-thirds the cost of the other estimates she received – and that was before her grand prize was applied!

Doing her homework to find the right window company

Replacing her windows is one of very few home improvements Annette has made since her home was built 24 years ago. Because of that, she didn’t have a go-to service provider in mind. But with a long career as a classroom teacher, Annette knew the value of doing her homework.

“I started by calling a couple of companies I had seen on TV or heard about on the radio,” she says, “but when they came to my house, neither of them brought a window for me to look at! That was really disappointing. At the prices they quoted me, how could they think I would make a decision without even seeing their product?”

Annette’s Improveit experience was much different. While meeting our team and entering the sweepstakes at the 2023 Ohio State Fair, she got to see Performax54 windows in action, and learn about their energy efficiency, style options, and lifetime warranty. For her in-home appointment, Area Sales Manager Randy Phipps walked through those benefits in detail from the comfort of Annette’s living room, so she could see what her new windows would look like in her home.

Annette's Sweepstakes 2023 Story Continues with spring Installation

Annette ultimately chose to install white vinyl Performax54 windows with Colonial grids throughout her home, including the massive architectural windows in front.

She said Improveit was “so much more down-to-earth in helping me find something that would be within my range,” and loves that she can lift the windows much easier than her old, heavy wood windows.

When installation day arrived, Improveit’s skilled installers put their experience to work carefully removing the old windows without damaging Annette’s beloved interior woodwork. Even with that care and consideration, the team’s signature efficiency didn’t go unnoticed.

“They were so fast!” Annette said. “I couldn’t believe how fast they got around here. They had most of the windows put in in one day and came back to finish up with the two big ones.”
