Shower Ceiling Options: What to Put Above a Shower Surround

Apr 03, 2026

A waterproof shower ceiling could make or break your bathroom design. Here’s what to put above a shower surround for the best results.

When you’re designing a new shower, it’s easy to focus on the walls, the floor, and the fixtures – but have you thought about the ceiling? In certain bathrooms, adding a shower ceiling panel is one of the smartest decisions you can make to protect your space and make your new shower truly worry-free.

Do I need a Ceiling Panel for My Shower?

When considering how to finish the walls above your shower, first determine if you need to take this step. Whether or not you need a shower ceiling panel depends largely on your shower’s layout. Here are three of the most common types:

Alcove Showers. If your shower is in an alcove (meaning it’s enclosed on three sides) or takes up the far wall of a rectangular bathroom, adding a ceiling panel is highly recommended. In these layouts, the shower tends to trap steam and moisture, concentrating it at the ceiling as it rises. Installing an acrylic ceiling panel creates a fully sealed environment that keeps moisture away from your drywall and prevents mold growth.

An alcove shower or one at the end of the bathroom, especially with a soffit or lowered ceiling, is an ideal application for a ceiling panel. This will help protect surrounding drywall from damaging moisture in a steamy shower space.

Bathrooms with high or vaulted ceilings usually have enough ventilation and a ceiling treatment is not needed. In these cases, always make sure your bathroom's ventilation fans and windows are in good working order so moisture doesn't accumulate.

High or Valuted Ceiling Bathrooms. However, if your bathroom has high or vaulted ceilings, finishing the ceiling above your shower might not be necessary. The extra height allows steam to disperse more easily, and adding a panel may not fit the aesthetic of an open, airy design. In these cases, opening windows or using a ventilation fan will help pull steam out of the bathroom and protecting your ceiling without needing an acrylic panel.

Slanted Rooflines. Keep specialty installations in mind too. If your shower is tucked into an area with a slanted roofline, your ceiling actually becomes an extension of the shower wall. In these cases, a ceiling panel isn’t just smart – it’s essential to fully waterproof your shower.

“In most bathrooms with standard-height ceilings. we design our showers to go to the top of the wall, and always want to make sure the ceiling is protected too,” says Sam George, lead design consultant for Improveit.

“Other companies may only have the shower walls go part-way up the wall, and will leave the drywall of the upper walls and ceiling exposed. But where does all the steam and heat go from your shower? Straight to paper-faced drywall, which makes a perfect food source for mold to grow. We get a lot of calls from homeowners that have gone through the experience of having to remove water-damaged drywall, and are looking for a solution that will prevent that from happening again.”

In showers with angled ceilings, the ceiling becomes an extension of the shower wall. Be sure to have your installer use an acrylic shower ceiling panel to fully waterproof your space.

Should I use an Acrylic Panel or tile for My Shower Ceiling?

What to put above your shower surround depends on your shower’s design and how much upkeep you want to deal with.

If you have an acrylic shower, it’s best to use an acrylic ceiling panel that matches or complements the shower surround. This will be installed seamlessly with your wall panels, creating a watertight, low-maintenance finish.

If you have a tiled shower, a tiled ceiling is the more aesthetic match. However, tiled ceilings come with a big caution: Grout is porous. Over time, steam and moisture can cause the grout to deteriorate, and in the worst-case scenario, tiles could eventually loosen and fall. This is true of your shower walls too, and it’s the reason Improveit advises against tile installations whenever possible.

When homeowners choose to skip the ceiling panel, it’s usually because they think it's going to cost more. While it does add a small amount to the cost, ultimately a ceiling panel saves you on the risk of mold growth and potentially costly water damage that you have to repair."

What are the Benefits of an Acrylic Shower Ceiling Panel?

An acrylic shower ceiling panel is exactly what it sounds like: a panel made from the same durable, non-porous acrylic material as your shower walls, but installed on the ceiling of your shower space. Installers will use strong, long-lasting adhesive, and will finish the installation with caulk at every seam to ensure a fully waterproof system.

Finishing the shower ceiling fully encloses your bathroom’s “wet space” and protects the ceiling from water, steam, and heat. The benefits of adding a ceiling panel include:

  • Moisture Protection: It prevents steam and moisture from damaging your drywall ceiling — no peeling paint, no mold, no water stains.
  • Easy Cleaning: Like acrylic shower walls, the ceiling panel wipes clean easily with mild soap and water — no scrubbing grout or worrying about mildew.
  • Seamless Appearance: The panel matches your shower walls for a clean, polished look that makes your bathroom feel cohesive and custom-built.
  • Long-Term Peace of Mind: Acrylic panels protect the structure behind the walls and ceiling, which helps avoid expensive repairs down the road.

Before the acrylic panels go on, Improveit bathroom remodeling goes a step further by replacing all the drywall in the wet space with mold-resistant backerboard and using an acrylic-specific caulking to completely seal the seams. Taking these extra steps to protect your bathroom from moisture damage are part of the reason we’re able to offer a full, transferable lifetime warranty!

Acrylic Showers: People Also Ask

The combination of tile and grout has been used in bathroom designs for generations, but acrylic shower surrounds are gaining attention for their low-maintenance, easy-clean surfaces that look like natural stone. Some people also prefer acrylic shower surrounds because they’re non-porous and don’t run the risk of harboring mold and mildew like tile surfaces.

Acrylic is a great, low-maintenance material for showers because it wipes clean so easily! Use a product like Formula 409 or a 50/50 solution of water and white vinegar with a soft cloth to wipe away water spots and accumulated grime.

When orange stains accumulate around your shower, this could indicate a build-up of iron, hard water, and bacteria that thrive in moist environments. In addition to regular cleaning, the best way to remove these stains is with a combination of natural and household cleaners that break down soap residue and other stains.

Bar soap creates heavy soap scum that’s much more difficult to clean than the residue from liquid soaps. The waxy substance develops when fatty acids in soap ingredients react with minerals in the water like magnesium and calcium.

There’s a wide range of costs associated with bathroom remodeling, all of which differ depending on where you live and the type of remodel you want to achieve. A project that involves moving walls and rearranging plumbing will be much more expensive than just replacing your wet space or making cosmetic updates. In general, the cost of a midrange bathroom remodel averages around $25,000 according to the annual Cost vs. Value Report.

How Much Does it Cost to Add an Acrylic Ceiling Panel to My Shower?

Good news! When you’re updating your bathroom, adding a ceiling panel won’t break the bank. Not only that, but finishing your shower ceiling with waterproof materials can save you the exorbitant cost of mold remediation that can come with uncontrolled moisture damage.

“When homeowners choose to skip the ceiling panel, it’s usually because they think it’s going to cost more,” Sam says. “While it does add a small amount to the cost, ultimately a ceiling panel saves you on the risk of mold growth and potentially costly water damage that you have to repair.”

Think of it as an insurance policy for your bathroom. A small upfront investment can save you thousands in potential water damage, mold remediation, and future renovation headaches.
