If Steve Hildenbrandt hadn’t made a career in the Air Force, and if he hadn’t been stationed in Dayton, and if his 2-year assignment hadn’t turned into putting down long-term roots in the area, he may never have found his way to the 2021 Miami Valley Home & Garden Show.
Thankfully for the amateur astronomer and astrophotography enthusiast, the stars aligned: The path that brought him to the Dayton area has turned into a 2022 Home Makeover Sweepstakes grand prize!
Path to the Home Remodeling Sweepstakes 2022
Up until Steve and his family moved into their 1991 home in Beavercreek, home improvements weren’t much of a priority.
“We moved 15 times in 30 years, so I never had to do any remodeling and almost no maintenance on houses because we never stayed in one place long enough,” he says. But as his family settled into the Dayton area, they took on numerous projects over the years, including a kitchen remodel and extensive deck and patio addition.
By 2021, Steve says it was time to give the bathrooms some attention – particularly the upstairs hall bath. “The shower has seen a lot of hard wear from four kids over a period of 17 years having used it,” he says. The needed updates brought him to the 2021 Miami Valley Home & Garden Show, and while Steve wasn’t sure what kind of solution he would find there, he definitely knew what he wasn’t looking for.
“About eight years ago, we did a whole kitchen remodel, that that was a laborious process,” he says. “I would not go back to the company we used for that, because we ended up way over budget and it was a really disruptive process. The fact that Improveit said they could update the bathroom in a short period of time made it very appealing.”
At the show, Steve learned all about Improveit’s high-quality products, fast installation process, and down-to-the penny quotes, all providing plenty of peace-of-mind. He also took a minute to enter Improveit’s annual Home Makeover Sweepstakes. “I totally forgot about it until I got the call that I won!” he says. “I’m very happy to receive the sweepstakes award for the shower re-fit.”
Sweepstakes 2022 Design Selections
After the Improveit team let Steve know the good news about his prize, they visited his home for a product selection meeting with Dayton Sales Manager Jeremy Austin. Before sitting down to discuss the details, Steve treated the Improveit team to a peek through one of his telescopes! After a quick astrophysics lesson about sun spots and a chat about his favorite local astronomical society, the group focused their lenses back on the task at hand: Designing Steve’s bathroom updates!
After years of steam impacting the walls in the home’s upstairs bathroom, Steve had moisture resistance and easy cleaning in mind for his bathroom.
He chose smooth travertine shower walls that go all the way to the ceiling, creating a completely water-safe surround for the entire shower. The warm stone color ties in well with the natural stone used throughout the home. Steve paired the selection with a matching soap dish and corner shelves, a white tub, and subtle brushed nickel fixtures.
On installation day, the Improveit crew removed the old shower surround, repaired the framing as needed, replaced all the drywall with moisture-resistant backerboard, and installed Steve’s beautiful new shower and fixture selections.
“It took just two days to do the tear-out and install, and I’ve got no complaints about that,” Steve says. “Kudos to all the people who were involved in the project.”
