A Whole House Approach to Improving Energy Efficiency

Apr 08, 2009

So you want to make your home more energy-efficient but you don’t know where to start.  There are several checklists, recommendations, and products out there to get you started, but what gets done first?

Here is a simple basic list of items to examine and then repair or replace at very little effort and cost to you:

  • Install Energy Star qualified compact fluorescent bulbs (CFLs). The CFLs will reduce lighting energy use by 50% to 75%.  This will save you about $30 or more in electricity costs over each bulbs lifetime
  • Clean and seal air ducts around your home. Exposed joints should be taped off, exposed holes or cracks should be filled in with caulk or tape and have a professional clean your air ducts.
  • Install an energy efficient programmable thermostat. With it being programmable you can control how hard the heating and cooling system works while you are not at home.
  • Conduct a radon test. Radon cannot be seen, smelled or tasted and is linked to lung cancer and death. One out of every 15 homes in the U.S. is estimated to have elevated radon levels.
  • Insulate holes and cracks. Seal holes that lead into the house such as plumbing and electrical. Save up to 10% or more on your energy bills by reducing air leaks in your home.
  • Install a carbon monoxide detector.
  • Cover your hot water heater with a hot water heater blanket. Water heating is the third largest energy expense in your home. With a blanket you will see 4%-9% savings in water heating costs.
  • Install water pipe insulation. This reduces heat loss and can raise water temperatures and allows for a lower thermostat setting.
  • Insulate your garage doors. This is a fast and easy way to insulate without the cost of replacement. This results in performance five times better than an uninsulated door and a 20 percent noise reduction.

All of these items are included in the Improveit! Energy Efficiency Package and can be installed by our qualified, trusted employees. Start your path to becoming “green” and enjoy a healthier and more efficient home while doing your part to help the environment!
