Is There an Energy Tax Credit for New Windows in 2024? About the Inflation Reduction Act

Feb 04, 2025

Looking for a tax credit for new windows? Here's what you need to know about the 2024 window tax credit - and changes for 2025

We have good news and bad news. The bad news is, tax credit changes are confusing. The good news is, our team has done the work for you to answer your questions about the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 and its energy tax credit for new windows.

The 2024 window tax credit could save you up to $600 on windows each tax year through 2032 – but changes are coming and may cost you more in the long run. Read our FAQ for more details.

Is there an energy tax credit for new windows in 2024?

Yes. Beginning in tax year 2023, the tax law was updated so homeowners can earn an energy tax credit of 30% of the cost of new windows, up to a maximum $600. This structure is part of the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022, which extends and increases benefits of the Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit (EEHIC). The credit can be claimed through 2032.

When do I claim my energy tax credit for new windows?

The tax credit can be taken in the year the windows are “placed in service” (installed) – not the date of your purchase.

  • For windows installed in 2024, claim your credit on your 2024 taxes (filed in 2025)
  • For windows installed in 2025, claim your credit on your 2025 taxes (filed in 2026)

What Changes are Coming for Window Tax Credits in 2025?

If your windows are installed on or after January 1, 2025, new requirements dictate which windows are eligible and how you claim the tax credit:

These changes mean that homeowners looking to qualify for the tax credit will be purchasing windows that meet stricter energy standards and are manufactured by a subset of approved manufacturers.

Is there a limit on the 2024 energy tax credit for windows?

There is an annual limit of $600 for new windows, but no lifetime limit. If you install some of your windows in 2024 and some in 2025, you can take the credit for both tax years.

Will Windows be More Expensive Because of Changes to the Window Tax Credits for 2024 or 2025?

Yes, your window cost may increase. The only windows that will earn the Energy Star Most Efficient status are those with at least three panes of glass (triple-pane windows). While these windows offer slightly improved energy efficiency over dual-pane windows, they come at a substantially higher pricepoint.

Triple-pane windows can cost 30-50% more than dual-pane windows. While the tax credit will earn you up to $600 toward your tax liability, it won’t cover the higher initial pricetag of purchasing triple-pane windows.

Do I Need Any Documentation to Claim the 2024 Window Tax Credit?

Yes, if your windows are installed in 2025 or later. For your 2024 taxes (filed in 2025), you shouldn’t need to supply any special information.

Beginning in tax year 2025 (filed in 2026), you must include the window’s Product Identification Number (PIN) on your tax return. This should be provided by your Qualified Manufacturer.

Why are windows included in the Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit?

As part of the Inflation Reduction Act, the EEHIC incentivizes home improvements that reduce household energy use, and energy-efficient windows are a great major contributor to your home’s energy performance. However, triple-pane windows are not the only windows that can help you accomplish this.

Improveit’s Performax54 windows, are highly energy efficient and can help reduce the load on your furnace and air conditioning systems year-round. Overall, this means you’ll benefit from lower energy bills even without the cumbersome tax credit process and added expense of triple-pane windows. Add in Improveit’s lifetime warranty and you’ll see how replacement windows are an excellent investment for your home!
