Is there an energy tax credit for new windows in 2023?
Yes. Beginning in tax year 2023, homeowners can earn an energy tax credit of 30% of the cost of new windows, up to a maximum $600. This structure is part of the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022, which extends and increases benefits of the Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit (EEHIC).
What if my windows were installed in 2022? Do I still get a tax credit?
Yes, however a different tax law applies. For windows installed in 2022, the EEHIC allows for 10% of the cost of the new windows, up to a maximum of $200.
When do I claim my energy tax credit for new windows?
The tax credit can be taken in the year the windows are “placed in service” (installed) – not the date of your purchase.
- For windows installed in 2022, claim your credit on your 2022 taxes (filed in 2023).
- For windows installed in 2023, claim your credit on your 2023 taxes (filed in 2024)
Is there a limit on the 2023 energy tax credit for windows?
There is an annual limit of $600 for new windows, but no lifetime limit. If you install some of your windows in 2023 and some in 2024, you can take the credit for both tax years.
Do I need any documentation to claim the tax credit?
Not at this time. We recommend keeping your purchase documentation in a safe place for reference, and conferring with a tax professional for any additional questions.
Why are windows included in the Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit?
As part of the Inflation Reduction Act, the EEHIC incentivizes home improvements that reduce household energy use. Windows that meet specific standards, including Performax54 windows, are highly energy efficient and can help reduce the load on your furnace and air conditioning systems. Overall, this means you’ll benefit from lower energy bills in addition to the tax incentives we’ve outlined. Add in a lifetime warranty and added value to your home, and replacement windows are an excellent investment for your home!
