More Time at Home Shines a Spotlight on Remodeling Needs
Jul 10, 2020stop putting it off
It’s easy to put off home maintenance during the busy days of commuting to work, shuttling the kids to school and activities, and spending free time dining out, shopping, and going to sporting events. But if you’re like us, then staying home over the last three months has brought those home improvement to-do lists back to the forefront. (We may have even added a few items!)
SURVEY SAYS
Remodeling magazine recently reported on the 2020 Kitchen & Bath Market Outlook, noting that nearly one-third of respondents to the survey said the pandemic “changed the way they use or think about their kitchen or bath.” A full 20% of respondents with at least one family member working from home indicated a desire to renovate their kitchen or bath in response to the pandemic.
This is a continuation of a trend spotted by LightStream. The consumer lending group found that 75% of homeowners polled in May (deep into pandemic quarantines) planned to take on a home improvement project in 2020 with an average cost near $12,000. Moreover, a recent Louisville Courier Journal article found that homeowners are tackling long-delayed home repairs during quarantine. Much of that activity is on the do-it-yourself side, but we know not all home improvements are DIY-friendly. In fact, a $12,000 investment suggests much bigger project than a weekend warrior would normally undertake.
A quick look at Google search term popularity supports this idea. Americans have been investigating home improvement projects more during quarantine than they were before lock-down rules went into effect. For example, over a 12-month time period, searches for “window replacement,” “siding replacement” and “contractors near me,” all saw rapid increases in popularity between March and June of 2020. Even perpetually popular terms around kitchen and bathroom remodeling saw a late-winter dip followed by a spike in activity during the Spring 2020 quarantine period. These larger projects will make hiring a trusted home remodeling company an important step in tackling that home improvement to-do list.
