How to Use the 2022 Color of the Year at Home

Ready to refresh your home with the 2022 Color of the Year?

Painting the walls isn’t your only option. Get inspired by these new Color of the Year selections.

A surprising trend was revealed when paint manufacturers began announcing their 2022 Color of the Year. One after the other, well-known paint companies including Sherwin-Williams, Behr, Valspar, PPG, and others, began showcasing variations on a theme for the 2022 color of the year, all revolving around soothing gray-green tones.

What is the 2022 Color of the Year?

From Sherwin-Williams’ evergreen fog, to PPG’s olive sprig, and Benjamin Moore’s October mist homeowners, DIYers, and design enthusiasts will instantly notice similarities between numerous 2022 Color of the Year announcements. All of them take their cues from nature-inspired gray-green tones, and share a calming, grounding feel. Behr’s 2022 Color of the Year, breezeway, strays slightly from the trend by leaning more blue, but retains the natural feel.

Believe it or not, these surprisingly similar colors* were not planned by their respective manufacturers. (Indeed, these companies are all competitors, so having such similar announcements makes it hard to leverage the individual colors in their marketing.) Color trends are carefully curated by researching trends in the fashion, automotive, retail, and hospitality industries, among others. So what the trend does point to is something the manufacturers all agree on: consumer trends are calling for natural tones.

This is quite a departure from the last several years of Color of the Year announcements that showcased a number of bolder colors and jewel tones. The collection of gray-green hues for 2022 strike a much different tone (pun intended!) even compared to last year’s Colors of the Year, which included a bold blue-green, a rich bronze, and an unexpected chartreuse color.

How to Use the 2022 Color of the Year at Home

“Evergreen fog inspires us to begin again, and is a great choice for modern interiors and exteriors,” says Sherwin-Williams’ director of color marketing Sue Wadden of the brand’s 2022 Color of the Year selection.

Since these colors are selected by paint companies, the obvious way to incorporate them is by using them as paint colors in and around your home. Whether as all-over color or accent walls, color can easily complement plumbing and lighting fixtures, countertops, shower walls, flooring, and other features to bring a room together.

Experiment With Color

Bathrooms make a great space for experimenting with color. Flip through the images below to pair your favorite design board with any of the 2022 Color of the Year options and see how they come together!

The brand’s evergreen fog color is an amazing option for windows, offering a subtle amount of natural-looking color that will blend well with many stone and siding colors, as well as trees, flowers, and other natural elements surrounding your home.

Looking for a different way to impact to your curb appeal? Consider using the color of the year as your siding color for an impressive look, or give your front door or shutters a new coat of paint.

“The finished product is amazing. It has totally transformed our bathroom. The product and fixtures are upscale and blend with the remainder of the bathroom. The representative helped us select the colors and patterns and reviewed the process. The installers were awesome. They knew what they were doing and cleaned up when they finished. They were friendly and took the time to do it right. Very professional.”

The salesman came to our home and explained the entire procedure. He helped us design our new walk-in shower, picking our patterns, colors, bench, showerhead/faucets, and doors. He ensured that flowed with the current bathroom design. The contracted installation went very smooth, Herb who did all the work was very knowledgeable and through with his work. He took his time, very attentive to detail, and didn’t leave until we were completely satisfied. He cleaned up each day before he departed. We highly recommend this company to do you remodeling.

Consider the Whole Home Color Palette

Many paint manufacturers agree that the 2022 Color of the Year options serve as a beautiful backdrop for complementary colors. “As the spaces in our homes continue to evolve, we uncover more opportunities to express our individuality and leverage the power of color to design environemtns that serve different functions and styles,” says Andrea Magno, Benjamin Moore’s director of color marketing and development.

Evergreen fog, October mist, and Valspar’s blanched thyme are part of larger color collections with palettes of complementary colors. Homeowners and designers can build off these palettes to easily add color to their homes in numerous ways. Whether you choose to do that through textiles, furniture, tableware, or a fresh coat of paint, adding the color of the year to your home has never been easier.
