Trendspotting: Home Renovation

Posted on:

The year’s almost over and it’s been a record-breaking one for home improvement spending. Consumer reports forecast this trend to carry on to 2014, saying homeowners feel confident in investing in their homes again. Here at Improveit!, we want our homeowners to be on track with home remodeling trends and help pump inspiration into their creative minds. We did the trendspotting, so you can go ahead and do the trendsetting. You’re welcome!

If you haven’t heard, Pantone announced in September its color of the year for 2014: Dazzling Blue (pictured below). From fashion to furniture, you can dabble or dive into this color trend around the home. Committing to painting a full wall can be scary so start smaller with an accent piece of furniture colored in this blue hue.

Color is an easy way to refresh your home, but what if you need more than a refresh? The major underlying trend in remodeling has shifted from luxury to functionality. Check out how this is affecting the redesign in all areas of the home, from bathrooms to exterior aesthetic  and materials used.

Bathrooms

Homeowners with smaller bathrooms are getting creative and converting their tubs to showers to save space without affecting function.

Subway tile has become so popular that it’s being recognized as a major trend in bathroom remodeling. Its ability to mix well with an already-there design makes homeowners believe it can stay current for years to come.

Aging-in-place is now more popular than ever, so renovations that make this possible, like a  walk-in bathtub or grab bars, are on the minds of many homeowners.

Green materials

An emerging trend is using energy efficient materials and products in the home in effort to reduce costs and energy inefficiency. Installing attic insulation is getting more and more attention from homeowners, since up to 40% of your homes energy escapes through an attic.

Saving money isn't a new trend, but it's getting more creative. Homeowners are investing more in energy savings tactics

Homeowners are becoming more mindful of how they can use less energy, but most don’t know where to begin. Home energy audits are an emerging trend that allows energy experts to search your home for energy inefficiencies and health risks, and then discuss and solve them.

Windows

Your windows can save energy too. Getting custom-climatized windows for the region that you live in is becoming more and more important. They keep unwanted air from escaping and getting in, allowing you to not only live comfortably all year long, but save you money on your monthly utility bills.

Not all windows are created equal. Yours need to be tailored to you and your region.

Because windows now have the technology to keep out heat or cold, homeowners are choosing larger windows in their living areas. Not only does this enhance the look of your house from the outside, but it brightens up the feel on the inside. Larger windows can make a room like more spacious and can bring the outdoors in. One of the most transformative renovations, replacement windows have a large return on investment too.
